To repair damaged or diseased tissues, cells can be recruited from surrounding tissues or organs and then induced to proliferate and differentiate in situ. Bone matrix is primarily composed of type I collagen and a proteoglycan (PG) termed "osteoid". Together, these macromolecules form a scaffold within which new bone is deposited. Unfortunately, in many situations it is not possible to replace the tissue with natural bone. For example, it is not possible to form bone in an arthritic joint. In such cases it is necessary to provide a scaffold for the growth of new bone. However, it is not possible to use tissue of the host organism for these purposes. The host's cells may have formed undesirable chemical and/or physical interactions with the scaffold. Thus, in situations where natural bone regeneration cannot occur, there is a need for a source of bone-like material which has similar physical and chemical properties to natural bone and/or which may be used as a scaffold to guide the growth of new bone. A number of materials have been used as bone replacement materials, including c be359ba680
